Data Library Analysis RFA

Background & Purpose

Since its establishment in 2018, the Bakar ImmunoX Initiative has led the way in advancing immunology research. Through funding numerous CoProjects and Pilots, the initiative has generated a wealth of data that can be shared with the wider scientific community. ImmunoX through the Data Science CoLab has curated these datasets into a comprehensive Data Library, which contains immunoprofiling data from a variety of disease indications. Standardized operating procedures ensure that the data is comparable across datasets, making it a valuable resource for researchers looking to explore new research questions.

To encourage members of the research community to take advantage of this resource, we are announcing the Data Library Analysis RFA. This RFA is designed to solicit proposals that leverage the Data Library to explore new research questions and to support the development of new analytical tools. The ideal project for this mechanism is one that includes the development of a novel analysis capability of the Data Library and its application to datasets on the Data Library in pursuit of a research question. Through this RFA, we aim to foster collaboration and innovation within the research community and accelerate scientific discovery in immunology, cancer, autoimmune diseases, chronic viral diseases, neurodegeneration, and related fields.

Proposal and Award Details

The Data Library Analysis RFA offers a unique funding opportunity designed to encourage the exploration of novel research questions. This initiative underscores the use of the Data Library's extensive collection of existing datasets, inviting researchers to engage more deeply with these resources to uncover new insights. Additionally, it supports the integration of external datasets for comparative analysis with the existing datasets within the Data Library.

A key feature of this RFA is the ability to pair innovative research questions with the development of analytical tools or pipelines. It actively promotes the incorporation of both new and existing analytical tools or pipelines into the Data Library. This emphasis on tool development aims to advance data mining capabilities, opening up fresh avenues for research and discovery. However, it is important to note that the primary focus of this RFA is the novel research question, with the development of analytical tools being an optional, yet beneficial, component. By merging data utilization with technological innovation, the RFA seeks to expand the horizons of research and yield deeper, more impactful insights across a variety of study areas.

Eligibility and Requirements

This RFA is open to all ImmunoX members. To participate, members must communicate and collaborate with the Data Science CoLab, which is responsible for managing the Data Library. Proposals may include funding for data scientists or engineers from the CoLab to work on the project. Alternatively, members may bring in their own data scientists or engineers to collaborate with the CoLab in analyzing datasets or developing new tools for the Data Library. This requirement ensures a cooperative effort among members and the Data Science CoLab toward the success of the project.

Submission and Review

A. Submission Requirements

The initial submission deadline is set for November 20, 2023, with rolling submissions accepted thereafter. Proposals must be submitted in accordance with the guidelines and instructions provided by ImmunoX. The proposal should include:

  • A summary of the proposed research question or analytical tool
  • A detailed plan for how the research or tool development will leverage the Data Library
  • A clear description of the methodology that will be used to answer the research question
  • A clear description of the methodology that will be used to develop the analytical tool

B. Review Criteria

All proposals submitted in response to this RFA will be reviewed by the ImmunoX Research Committee. Proposals will be evaluated based on their:

  • Does the proposed research question address an important and impactful question? Or does the proposed analytical methodology address an important and impactful hole in current Data Library analysis capabilities?
  • Is the research question feasible within the timeframe proposed? Is there sufficient data available in the Data Library to address the research question?
  • Does the proposal demonstrate the potential for effective collaboration between the research team and the Data Science CoLab?
  • Is there a benefit of this analysis capability to the ImmunoX community beyond answering the PIs proposed research question?
